We are creating a world leading life science area
Representatives of two cities, one County Council, three universities and the business sector have jointly agreed to establish and develop a world leading life science area in the Karolinska-Norra Station district. At least SEK 50 billion will be invested in the area until 2025, which makes it the largest investment ever in Sweden.
- This investment will make Stockholm one of the most attractive regions in the world in terms of attracting investments and the most prominent researchers. Through the investments we join two cities while taking an important step towards becoming Europe’s number one growth region, says the Mayor of the City of Stockholm Sten Nordin.
The public actors City of Stockholm, City of Solna and Stockholm County Council together with the business sector through four private research foundations, as well as the three universities of Karolinska Institutet, KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Stockholm University are the actors behind the investment. The actors operate jointly through the foundation Stockholm Science City.
- The Stockholm - Uppsala region is already world leading in the field of life sciences. With that as a starting point, we now have the opportunity together with the three internationally prominent universities in Stockholm to develop a unique area in the Karolinska-Norra Station district in one of the research fields of the future, says the President of the Foundation, Per Unckel.
The project is now moving into an investment phase. Both public and private investors are showing a high level of interest. Important investments which have already been agreed include the development of New Karolinska Solna University Hospital, the Science for Life Laboratory and four life science blocks next to the new hospital, as well as the construction of Tors Towers. One of the towers will be dedicated entirely to life science activities.
A record-breaking investment in the area has also been agreed. Oslo Næringseiendom AS will build the four blocks next to the new hospital that are completely dedicated to life science. They will also build Tors Towers, two buildings that are roughly 140 metres tall.
