New interdisciplinary project: Hearing Bridge

Hearing Bridge (Hörselbron) aims to become the leading platform within technical assistance to communication for both the hearing impaired and the hearing.

These new interdisciplinary operations are to reach the leading edge by coordinating Stockholm Region’s unique competences and resources within the fields of hearing physiology, hearing impairments, acoustics, signal processing, psychoacoustics and audio technology. Karolinska Institutet, the Royal Institute of Technology, Karolinska University Hospital plus Stockholm County Council Hearing Clinic and the Swedish Association of Hard of Hearing People are participating partners in this venture.  Stockholm Science City (SSCi) is also an active member of this project.

In order to achieve this aim the partners intend to work with streamlining research between universities within this field and by stimulating contacts between business/industry and the academic world. One important part of this project is to expand the Tools of Science platform, which is already a successful concept developed within SSCi, into the sound and hearing field.

According to figures published by Statistics Sweden and the Swedish Association of Hard of Hearing People, the proportion of hearing impaired people has increased by more than 14% between 1985 and 2005. This figure proves that hearing technology is an important area with a large, and growing, market.

The Hearing Bridge Project is led by Peter Nordqvist and will be based at Stockholm Science City’s (SSCi) office in the Wenner-Gren Center. “We worked actively to move in with SSCi as the organisation is a neutral party with a wide contact network in business/industry”, states Peter.
