Mr. and Mrs. Gates receive honorary doctorates at KI

Karolinska Instituet gives founder of Microsoft Bill Gates and his wife Melinda French Gates the degree Honorary Doctors of Medicine. Mr and Mrs Gates will both receive honorary doctorates of medicine in recognition of their support of scientific work on global health issues through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. They have made an active and long-term contribution to improving human health where the need is greatest.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation supports healthcare in poor countries and funds research on effective measures to deal with the greatest global health problems. To date, the Foundation has paid out 7.8 billion dollars in grants for global health.

The conferment ceremony will be held today, the 23 of January 2008, at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. Bill Gates will attend the ceremony in person.
